Online SCPLH Preparation Course for Scotland
Thinking about applying for a personal licence in Scotland? Before you can apply, you need to pass the Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders, usually called the SCPLH. Our online course helps you learn the material at your own pace, test yourself as often as you like, and walk into the accredited exam feeling ready.
The course costs £30 + VAT (£36.00 including VAT). It takes about 5 hours, and you can study on your own schedule.

Important: this is a preparation course
We want to be clear about this up front. Our course is a study and practice course. Our certificates show that you completed our training and passed our quiz. They are not the accredited SCPLH qualification, and a Licensing Board will not accept them on their own for a personal licence application.
To apply for a personal licence, you still need to pass the accredited SCPLH exam through an approved centre of an awarding body. Our course is designed to help you prepare for that step. You can read more in our guide on how to get a personal licence in Scotland.
How it works
- Enrol online. Pay £30 + VAT and get access to the course.
- Study the modules. Work through the lessons on your phone, tablet or computer. Your progress is saved, so you can stop and start.
- Take the course quiz. Answer the questions at the end of the course. If you do not reach 70%, review the topics and try again as many times as you need.
- Get your certificates. You receive a certificate of completion when you finish, and a second certificate when you hit 70% or more on the quiz.
- Book the accredited exam. When you feel ready, book the accredited SCPLH exam with an approved centre, then apply to your local Licensing Board.

The course follows the main topics of the Scottish personal licence syllabus, including:
- The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 and the five licensing objectives
- How Licensing Boards and Licensing Standards Officers work
- Premises licences, personal licences and occasional licences
- Licensed hours and operating plans
- Protecting children and young people, including age checks
- Responsible retailing and irresponsible drinks promotions
- Offences, penalties and how the law is enforced
- Alcohol units and the effects of alcohol

Two certificates, unlimited quiz retries
Lots of people feel nervous about exams, especially if it has been a while since they last sat one. That is why the course quiz has no limit on attempts. You can take it, see where you went wrong, go back to the lessons and take it again.
You get two course certificates:
- Certificate of completion, when you finish all the modules
- Quiz certificate, when you score 70% or more on the course quiz

Your next step after our course
Once you have finished our course and feel confident with the quiz, the next steps are:
- Book and pass the accredited SCPLH exam at an approved centre. Some centres offer it online with remote invigilation.
- Apply to the Licensing Board for the area where you live, with your SCPLH certificate and the application fee.
- Keep a note of your refresher deadline. Licence holders need to complete the SCPLH refresher within 5 years of the licence being issued. See our SCPLH refresher guide.

No. It is a preparation course with our own course certificates. You still need to pass the accredited SCPLH exam through an approved centre before you apply for a personal licence.

You can retake it. Unlimited retries are included in the price.
