What you will learn

Module titles below follow the public SCPLH syllabus topics.

Module 1: Licensing law in Scotland

The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005, the role of the Scottish Government's guidance, and how the law fits together.

Module 2: The five licensing objectives

Crime and disorder, public safety, public nuisance, public health, and protecting children and young persons from harm. What each one means for your day to day decisions.

Module 3: Licensing Boards and Licensing Standards Officers

Who grants licences, who checks premises, how hearings and reviews work.

Module 4: Types of licence

Premises licences, operating plans and conditions, personal licences and occasional licences.

Module 5: Licensed hours

Standard hours, extensions and what happens outside permitted hours.

Module 6: Protecting children and young people

Age checks, proof of age, age verification policies and who can be on the premises.

Module 7: Responsible retailing

Irresponsible promotions, pricing rules, refusing sales and dealing with drunk customers.

Module 8: Offences and enforcement

Common offences, penalties and what can lead to a licence review.

Module 9: Alcohol and its effects

Units, strength and how alcohol affects people.

How the 5 hours work

The course is split into short lessons so you can learn in small chunks. Most people finish within 5 hours of study time, but you can take longer if you prefer. Your progress saves as you go. You can use a phone, tablet or computer with an up to date browser.

Your certificates

• Certificate of completion: issued when you finish every module.
• Quiz certificate: issued when you score 70% or more on the course quiz.

Both certificates are issued by us and show your name, the course title and the date. They are course certificates, not the accredited SCPLH. Read more about the quiz and certificates.

What our course does not include

To keep things clear:

• It does not include the accredited SCPLH exam
• It does not issue an SCPLH certificate from an awarding body
• It is not a personal licence and it does not submit an application for you
• It is not the mandatory staff training for bar and shop staff
